# Snow Removal

Snow in Denver usually leaves on its own. The problem is what it does on the way out. A sunny afternoon melts the pile at the top of the driveway, the water runs across the sidewalk, and by evening it has frozen into a sheet a shovel will not touch. Clearing early, down to the concrete, and putting the snow where its meltwater will not cross a walking surface is most of this job.

**$40 an hour, 1 hour minimum.** Every visit is billed at least one full hour even if the work takes thirty minutes. [Why, and how to get the most out of it](https://spottedwood.com/pricing/).

## What the job involves

- Public sidewalk first, then the path to the door, then the driveway. The clock on a public walk starts when the snow stops falling, not when you get home from work, and it keeps running overnight and through the weekend. Every city here sets its own window, so give me the address and I will work to it.
- Clearing down to the concrete instead of leaving a packed half inch behind. That thin layer is what melts at noon, runs downhill, and freezes into the strip nobody can shovel the next morning.
- Deciding where the snow goes, which matters more here than how fast it comes off. Piles go downhill of anything you walk on, off the gas meter, and back from the corner so the curb ramp and the sightline stay open. Snow stacked at the top of a sloped driveway sends its own meltwater right back across the walk.
- The berm. After the apron is clear, the city plow can come through and pack a wall across the end of the driveway. That is a separate pass, and it is worth deciding up front whether you want me back for it or you would rather break it up yourself.
- Steps, landings and anything with a railing get done by hand. A shovel does not swing on a stair tread, and stairs are where the fall happens.
- De-icer if you want it. I will spread what you have or pick up what you ask for. Rock salt quits working once pavement drops into the teens, and clear nights here get there. Calcium and magnesium chloride keep going colder. On concrete poured in the last year, the honest answer is sand.

## What changes the price

Water content matters more than depth. A foot of dry January powder comes off faster than half as much wet March snow falling near freezing, and March is the snowiest month here on average, not January. Fresh snow is quick. Snow that has been parked on, walked on and refrozen has to be broken loose first, which is closer to doing the job twice. After that it is how far your public sidewalk runs across the lot, how far snow has to be carried to a spot it can legally sit, steps and railings, driveway slope, cars in the way, and whether you want a return trip once the plow berms the apron. Recurring winter work is invoiced monthly.

## What people usually get wrong

The common one is waiting to see if the sun handles it. Often it does, which is why the gamble feels smart in Colorado. The cost shows up when it does not. By the second day the walked-on strip is ice bonded to the concrete, and chipping that loose takes longer at the same hourly rate than clearing fresh snow would have. The clearing window does not pause for a warm forecast either, and it is the public sidewalk in front of the house, not the driveway, that a neighbor calls about.

## Send me this and I can quote it without coming out

There is no trip charge either way, but a remote quote is faster for both of us and it costs you nothing to try.

- Summer photos are best: the bare driveway and front walk, plus one from the street showing how far your sidewalk runs across the lot.
- A close shot of the steps, the landing and any railing, and the path people actually use to reach the door.
- Where snow cannot go: the gas meter, the corner curb ramp, the neighbor's walk, and anything uphill of a surface you walk on.
- Whether the driveway slopes, and whether cars will be sitting on it when I get there.
- Your address and the time it needs to be clear by. Text it all to (720) 681-4380.

## When I am the wrong call

No plow, and no second driver. In a real storm one person works through the day in the order the jobs come, so I cannot promise your entrance is bare by six in the morning. If a cleared surface at opening time is a liability you are managing, or you have a parking lot, or you need somebody who still shows up when a truck will not start, hire an outfit with several drivers and a blade. I also do not go on roofs and I do not do ice dams.
