Door tops and casings, baseboards, window sills and the tracks under the sashes, the grille on the return air vent, the underside of the range hood, the inside of the oven. It goes slowly because dust falls, so the whole house runs high to low, dry before wet, floors last. It is the visit that sets a baseline rather than the one that holds it. Ceiling fan blades, then door tops and casings, then baseboards, then floors. Skip that order and you vacuum the same floor twice, which is why a deep clean of one room does not take a quarter of the time of four. - The kitchen is a degreasing job. The hood filter comes out to soak, and the wall and cabinet fronts above the range get a surfactant and a few minutes to work. Grease does not scrub off cold, it has to release first. The range slides out after that if the flooring lets it. - Shower glass is its own job. Where the water leaves minerals, ordinary bathroom spray will not move the film. It takes an acidic cleaner, dwell time and a pad that is safe for the surface under it, and it is usually the slowest square foot in the house. - The detail work has no machine shortcut. Switch plates, door handles, blind slats one at a time, sills and the tracks under the sashes, and light fixture globes taken down, emptied out and washed. - Appliance interiors are their own blocks of time. An oven needs dwell time before anything lifts, a fridge means shelves out and washed by hand, a microwave is quick. Say which ones you want so they land in the estimate instead of at the end of the day. - Furniture I can move by myself gets moved and cleaned behind. A loaded bookcase, a piano, or a fridge sitting on tile stays where it is unless you are home and want to help shift it. ## What changes the price Age of the buildup matters more than square footage. A guest bath nobody uses is quick. One shower with years of scale on the glass can eat an hour by itself. Blinds, appliance interiors and the inside faces of window glass each add real time, so they are in or out by your say rather than assumed. Pets mean extra vacuum passes and hair stuck along baseboards and vent grilles. Loose items on every surface slow the whole thing down, because each one is a lift, a wipe and a set back down. A house with people and dogs moving through it takes longer than an empty one. ## What people usually get wrong The line people misjudge is dirty versus worn. Mineral scale that sat on shower glass for years can etch it, and that glass still reads cloudy once it is clean. Grout pulls stain into the pores and comes up lighter, not new. Vinyl yellows, tub finish dulls, cheap cabinet laminate loses its sheen for good. Three people finish in one day what I would spread across two or three visits, and when the date is fixed that matters more than the hourly rate does. Same answer for construction dust, smoke damage, or a house that needs remediation rather than cleaning.
